Flight Airlines Around the World Introduce Fuel Surcharges Amid Soaring Oil Prices

Fuel is one of the main components that plays a crucial role in assessing the total cost to book a flight. Research data from the IATA (International Air Transport Association) shows that the average price of jet fuel increased by 116.8% for the week ending March 27. As a result, several airlines, including Canadian airlines, have introduced fuel-related surcharges.
Insights from Toronto
Travelers from Canada have been reporting that several major carriers have introduced fuel surcharges that have led to higher costs for flights. This step is taken to combat jet fuel prices because of the significant inflationary pressure on air travel.
Among these airlines, Porter Airlines, WestJet, and Air Transat have confirmed the implementation of the additional fees. As compared to the previous weeks, early March 2026 has witnessed increased jet fuel prices of over 58 per cent due to a massive spike in global oil prices.
WestJet and Porter in the Lead for the Surcharges
WestJet has said that it will impose a new temporary fuel surcharge of $60 per passenger on all flight reservation for visa holders using the companion voucher. Introduced earlier in the month of April, the surcharge is included under the Other ATC part of the reservations. In a statement to the Toronto Star, WestJet spokeswoman Jennifer Booth stated that her company is regularly monitoring developments, and although airfares do fluctuate, it is difficult for the company to adjust when it comes to companion vouchers.
A temporary peak surcharge of $40 per flight segment will also be imposed on all VIPorter loyalty rewards redemptions by Porter Airlines. This change has been imposed on an individual per-flight segment basis and in both directions. Moreover, the surcharge comes in light of the latest increases in fuel costs.
Response from the Travel Industry
This is not the case with Canadian Airlines only, as other airlines are not immune to the increased financial pressures. For instance, Air Transat has introduced a surcharge of 50$ CAD on flight segments departing Canada and an increase of 35€ on segments departing from Europe.
In addition, Air Canada’s leisure and vacations have implemented a 50$ increase per passenger on warm-weather packages from April 6th. Though this specific airline does not disclose its broad surcharge amount on the main brand flights, it has stated that fluctuations in fuel prices are regularly reflected in its entire pricing structure.
The Problem: An Unpredictable Oil Market

The surcharges have been prompted by an unpredictable oil market situation, caused partially by geopolitical instabilities in the Middle East region, especially after decreased flows of oil due to vital routes being blocked, including the Strait of Hormuz. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), jet fuel rates saw a 40 percent rise in March 2026 compared to the end of February.
It has been pointed out that this is simply a matter of survival since fuel remains one of the major costs of airlines. The surcharges and consolidations are a matter of survival. If oil prices continue to go up, then other charges, like baggage charges, may be next, an analyst explained.
Impact on Future Flight Bookings and Consumers
It is a challenging time for all the travelers around the world as these price increases coincide with the lead-up to the summer travel season. Therefore, experts from the industry are urging travelers to book their flights as soon as possible to avoid potentially higher costs later. Reports from the Flight Center Canada show that high-demand summer destinations, such as Europe (Schengen Area) and Japan, have already seen substantial price surges.
Surprisingly, this fuel surcharge will be seen as a setback for some travelers; however, this cannot deny the fact that the demand for travel will still remain high. But there will be a limit to it. If the prices for fuel keep soaring, the airlines may have to face increased scrutiny and be forced to consider drastic measures. For instance, reduced capacity on certain routes was reported by the Air Transat officials in the Montreal Gazette.
A Double Blow for Airlines
The pressure comes amid a period where most airlines are already dealing with the economic effects of the preceding years. Whereas some companies, such as Air Transat, have fuel hedging plans for covering about half of their total fuel usage, the quick rise makes it very difficult for the whole sector.
Thus, it is important for the entire travel industry to try to be lenient in other services of the travel journey for a smooth summer season for the travelers around the world.
